Sympatec Laser Diffraction – Inhaler Attachment

The INHALER Attachment is a versatile adapter for the investigation and the development of all kinds of inhalers, MDI's, propellant gas sprays or pump sprays. The central stage with the measuring chamber and the vacuum control unit can be adapted to the needs of a wide range of devices (and target patient types) by a flexible tool kit.

In addition to “typical particle sizing” the technique can provide “time slicing” of powder release from a device:

The graph below shows just two datasets from a single run, the 0.5 second time point and the 5.0 second time points.

Taking the first data collected, this shows that the sample mass released at the early stage ( 0.5 second) of firing comprises a higher proportion of the small size particle fraction compared to datasets generated later in the actuation (second line).

By 5.0 seconds the particle size distribution of the sample passing through the measuring zone has changed, the distribution is skewed to the larger particle size fractions.

This distribution can be also be visualized by looking at cumulative data.
